The XXI Winter Olympic Games have started. They take place in Canada, in Vancouver.
Olympic Games is the greatest event in the world of sport. They take place every four year in different countries. The best sportsmen gather to prove who is the strongest, the quickest and the highest!
The first Olympic Games were held in ancient Greece in 776 B. C. They lasted for 5 days. There were no wars during those days. Every city sent its best athletes to Olympia. The winner was given a branch of wild olive and that was the greatest honour. Those Games were for men only. The women were forbidden even to watch the Games.
Then the Games were not held for some time.
The modern Olympic Games took place in Athens in 1896.
For the first time our country began to take part in the Olympic games in 1952. Since then it has won a lot gold, silver and bronze medals. And since then the people all over the world know and admire our sportsmen such as Alexei Nemov, Irina Rodnina, Vladislav Tret`yak, Elena Isimbaeva!
In 1980 Moscow hosted the XXII Summer Olympic Games. And the next Winter Olympic Games will take part in Sochi. I am proud of this fact!
And now 360 sportsmen represent our country in Vancouver. They are the best in skiing, skating, figure – skating, ice – hockey. Of course it will be not easy to win, because there are a lot of top sportsmen there. The strongest will win. But nevertheless let`s wish good luck to our sportsmen! We`ll hope for them!
As for me I`ll watch figure – skating competition, because it is my favourite sport. I have never done it myself, but I am always fascinated by the grace, speed and skill of the skaters and how well they can dance on the ice. My favourite sportsman is Eugenie Plyushchenko. I`ll keep my fingers when he dances! And it is unimportant, if he`ll win or lose, I think he is the ace of aces!
