Wedding dress history

For the brides, the wedding day is often regarded as a special day, therefore for this event the bride should be dressed with something really special. It can be said that wedding dress is as old as marriage itself, but the dress in the form we all know today appeared quite late.

In Western culture, wedding dresses began to be more of the more elaborate and more luscious, especially starting with medieval times. In the Middle Ages, most marriages were based on interest, the marriage could be a union between two families, two family businesses and even two countries. Therefore, the dress was supposed to benefit the bride and post it in a favorable light as it is a sign of social status.
Bridal dress differ from culture to culture, white dress being a fairly modern invention, which tries to suggest purity.

One of the first women to wear white wedding dress was Queen Mary of Scotland, in her marriange the with Francis II of France, in the XVI century. The white dress wasn’t appreciated, especially that in France during that period, the white color was considered a mourning color.

The white color wedding dress became popular only in the nineteenth century, with the marriage of Queen Victoria with Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg.

Before spreading the white color dresses, the brides wore dresses of all colors, less color black, which was a sign of mourning, and less the red color, which was considered a particular color for prostitutes.
In China and India, red is the color of luck and prosperity, which is why brides often get used to choose red color dresses.

The way that the wedding dress look today (long, often large, with veil, train and all sorts of accessories to put on the brides head) comes from the way that princess wore dressed since medieval times.
Women from lower social classes could not afford such a dress, but have tried to copy so that this type of dress has spread very quickly for the wedding ceremony, becoming a real tradition in all social classes.
