The USA is situated in the central part of the North American continent. Its western coast is washed by the Pacific Ocean and its eastern coast by the Atlantic Ocean. The highland regions are the Appalachian Mountains in the east, and the Cordillera in the west. The main rivers of the USA are the Mississippi, Saint Lawrence River and Hudson River. The USA is a very large country, so it has several different climatic regions. The population of the USA is more then 236 million people. Most of the people live in towns. The largest cities are New York, Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit, San Francisco. The capital of the USA is Washington, DC.
Washington DC, the nation’s capital, includes a broad metropolitan area, linking Northern Virginia and Suburban Maryland. DC itself is not a town at all, being a city and municipality.
The USA is a highly developed industrial country, and its agriculture is highly mechanized. The state of Illinois is especially rich in coal. Iron is mined near the Great Lakes and in other areas. The USA has rich oilfields in California, Texas, Alaska and other places. Heavy industries are for the most part situated in in the Midwest, around Detroit and Chicago, and in the Northeast.
Shipbuilding is developed in San Francisco and Seattle. The automotive industry is highly developed especially in Detroit.
Editor’s note-In English, we don’t use the word “machine” for cars or automobiles, hence this industry is referred to as the “automotive industry”
The USA is Federal republic consisting of fifty states, each of which has its own state government.
The president is the commander-in-chief, the leader of the country, and head of state. Furthermore, in the US there are no government ministers as in Russia. The president appoints his cabinet staff, and they are called “secretaries”, not ministers. For example, the Secretary of Defense (and head of the Pentagon), the Secretary of State, (and head of the State Department, currently Hillary Clinton).
Congress consists of two houses, the House of Representatives and Senate. In the USA there are two main political parties, the Democratic Party and The Republican Party.
There is a separate Socialist Party in the USA, that itself works for socialism. Regarding the Communist Party of the USA, it has an extremely small representation, with only 2500 members today in the 21st century, and has never had enough support to ever have a presidential candidate. The general population absolutely does not support nor approve of the communist party. It would have been more worthy to mention the Green Party, that champions environmental issues, and that is more relevant to modern day agenda, considering the global warming and other troubling world climate issues.
