Since television became widely available in 1950s, it has grown steadily in popularity. Nowadays almost every family has even more than 2 TV sets, consequently, children can easily occupy one of them and sped their free time in front of the screen. This global addiction has already caused some harmful effect on young people. Moreover, this tendency seems to continue.
Some experts believe that teenagers who spend more than 5 hours a day watching TV are becoming more and more aggressive. In evidence for this, some psychological tests have been conducted in order to find out what kind of emotions are experienced by children who spend too much time in front of the screen. Exactly 20 young people participated in the experiment. They were divided into 2 groups and had to watch TV for 5 hours non-stop. The results were as following: approximately seven out often participants of the first experimental group, which had to watch action films, thrillers, cartoons as well as commercials, were hyperaggressive and hyperactive. However, feelings and emotions of more than three-quarters members of the second group, which watched BBS educational films, classical movies and no commercials, were positive and remained stable during the whole experiment. So the conclusion can be drawn from this experiment that television does affect dramatically children`s health.
On the other hand, it can be argued that watching TV can actually be harmful. According to the results of the test, which has already been mentioned, children who watched educational programs about wildlife and nature, as well as scientific films, were not badly affected. On the contrary, most of then gained positive experience and additional knowledge as well as relaxed while focusing on classical movies. Besides, none of them experienced any stress or irritation because there were no commercials on TV. So, it`s absolutely evident that educational TV shows can`t do any harm to young people.
Thus, we have seen that television can be both vice and virtue and everything depends entirely on the person and programs he or she likes watching. Moreover, the time teenagers spend in front of the screen should be limited, some TV shows should be banned and young people should be engaged into more `productive` activities such as reading, painting, swimming or IT studies.
