Supermarket hoping honesty will prevail

A supermarket in Hamilton is still counting the cost, days after a major security bungle which saw shoppers help themselves after the doors accidentally opened on Good Friday.

The mystery shoppers who joined in the free for all at the Hamilton Pak ‘n Sav still haven’t been publicly identified.

A glitch in the store’s computer system caused the doors to open at 8am on Good Friday with no staff on hand. Customers had nearly 90 minutes to take what they wanted before police were alerted to the unusual event.

“At the end of the day if a car yard left all the keys in the cars and were open you wouldn’t walk in and steal a car would you,” said grocery manager Joseph Dodd.

“It’s clearly unacceptable.”

Police are waiting for the supermarket to do a stock check before they decide whether to lay charges, but Pak ‘n Save has said with the long weekend and a busy day today it will have to wait until the end of the week.

And as the store checks to see how much is really missing, those that stole have a window to return the goods.

Any money that does come back to the store will be given to Christchurch as a donation.

Today, shoppers waited patiently outside the Pak ‘n Sav for staff to open the doors at 1pm.
