London has been the home of many famous Englishmen. Some were born here. Some lived there all their lives. Others lived in London only for a short time but all gave something to this great city.

One of the first name of importance is the name of the greatest seamen Admiral Lord Nelson. He has a very special memorial in Trafalgar Square. It is called the Nelson Column. It is situated in the center of the square.

Lord Horatio Nelson was born in 1758 in a family of a priest. He came to the Navy at the age of 12. In 1777 Horatio passed the exam and became the lieutenant and the captain of the frigate. In 1793 he commanded the ship in the team of Admiral Hood in the Mediterranean against France. He was very brave and self-confident.

In September, 1805 Nelson blocked Franco-Spanish fleet and in October he defeated it near Trafalgar. In this battle he was wounded and died. Lord Nelson was buried in London in 1806.

British people are proud of Horatio Nelson.
