Over 300 killed in tornadoes in US
Tornadoes and violent storms have battered a wide area of southern parts of the United States, leaving at least 300 people dead.

NHK has learned the storms on Wednesday and Thursday killed 302 people in six states. In Alabama, 204 people were confirmed dead, 34 in Tennessee and 33 in Mississippi.

In Tuscaloosa, Alabama, the worst hit city, a huge tornado destroyed most buildings on the main street. More than 600 people were injured and brought to hospital.

The US government says many people remain missing. It has mobilized 2,000 National Guard personnel for rescue operations.

The death toll is the highest from multiple tornadoes in the US since 1974 when over 300 people were killed.

Tornadoes also hit the US earlier this month. More than 40 people were killed in the three days from April 14th to 16th.

President Barack Obama is scheduled to visit the affected areas in Alabama on Friday to express the government’s commitment to rescue and relief operations.
