How often do you run into a situation in life and think to yourself, “Nobody ever prepared me for this?”
The truth is, there is absolutely no way to prep anybody on how to explicitly deal with every possible life event that could conceivably happen. Instead, the trick is to come to an understanding that everything works out in the end and there is nothing that could happen to you that you can’t find a way to deal with.
Here’s some ways to help prepare for whatever life throws at you.
Learn to love yourself
The strongest foundation that I know for life is true love for oneself. When we love ourselves, we have the strength to act in accordance with our values and interests. It’s almost impossible to be filled with positivity and productive optimism without loving yourself.
After all, if we do not feel worthy of love, how on earth will we have faith in ourselves to handle anything that life throws our way? How will we find the motivation to seek solutions, act proactively and defend our interests?
If you don’t feel like you love yourself or have healthy self esteem, it’s time to take steps to change that.
Seek Support
Whether you are an introvert or extrovert, you need a strong social network. The problems life throws our way are much more manageable when we know we have others in our life that can lend a helping hand, an understanding ear or assist us in figuring out a solution.
The time to start building those networks is now instead of in your time of need. If you are introverted by nature, this might take special effort. Know that it’s not necessary to try and change your personality. You don’t have to become the life of the party to build strong relationships with others, but you might have to step outside of your comfort zone. There are others that will appreciate your low-key way of life and respect your need for plenty of alone time, but it’s up to
you to seek them out.
Live a lot
The more we experience of life, the more we come to realize that things work out in the end. As you go through life, you’ll experience joy, pain, loss, discovery, and a thousand other different thoughts and emotions. Throw yourself into life as it happens around you and you’ll find that it becomes easier to maintain your internal sense of peace.
Each day, make a pact with yourself that you will:
Love deeply despite the possibility of loss
Exult in possibilities despite the possibility of disappointment
Try with all your heart despite the possibility of failure
Enjoy today even though there is no guarantee of tomorrow
Endure despite the voice that says you can’t
Cry your heart out and know that it will be full again
Work hard even while those around you say it’s futile
Keep hope because you are strong, resilient, and flexible.
Remember that life will always throw the unexpected at you. You’re not always going to have step-by-step instructions or a model to follow that will tell you how to deal with it. Instead, the best preparation you can have for life is to cultivate a genuine love for yourself along with a healthy sense of self-worth, nourish relationships with those that can support and encourage you, and live life to its fullest each and every day without fear of loss or failure.
