A Tisket, a Tasket, What a Beautiful Basket

One of my favorite antique buttons depicts a poodle carrying a basket. The image is based on Gustave Doré’s illustration of Aesop’s Fable called “The Dog That Carried His Master’s Dinner.” In the illustration, the unfaithful dog takes the best morsel for himself after the other dogs persuade him to give the meat to them instead of to their expectant master. My own dogs would never bother to carry a basket and would most certainly take all the meat for themselves. Baskets come in many attractive forms and are usually made of simple, natural materials. Over the years I have acquired quite a few and find them a handy and inexpensive way to hold yarn, laundry, DVDs, other baskets, papers, more yarn, warm bread or works in progress. Baskets make excellent containers for a cluster of gifts or as a perfect present all by themselves.
Put all your eggs in one basket at a farmers market or transport a warm dish to a potluck.
Keep your baskets somewhere so it is possible to admire the rhythm and pattern of the woven and braided strands of their structures.
Some baskets perform their tasks with modesty, humility and charm.
Other baskets will stun you with their elegance and beauty.
Basket makers use a great diversity of simple materials – reed, oak, pine needles, horsehair, wire. If it can be bent, stitched and wrapped, it can be used to form a basket.
In a world of mass production, baskets have remained stubbornly natural and handmade. Explore the possibilities.
